1 PROGRAM INTENT: A Metropolitan POSITION
Today’s urban atmosphere is progressively based on shifting demographic, economic, and environmental systems their overlap determines dynamic conditions and oftentimes discloses competing focal points. By realizing these changes shape our public spaces, it's the intent from the Graduate Program of Landscape Architecture to border these concerns as guiding factors within the construction and designs from the urban landscape. In this way, individuals spaces through which the landscape is determined – for example infrastructure systems, urban watersheds, industrial sites, suburban towns, and city fabric – end up being the labs for that program’s educational focus. The curriculum places a focus on style of the built atmosphere including its social dimension, physical experience, and environmental systems.
Working along with allied design disciplines symbolized inside the school – including Architecture, Urban Design, Community and Regional Planning, and also the Lady Bird Manley Wildflower Center – the professional curriculum stresses interdisciplinary endeavors that provide the requirements of the city, the condition, and also the society in particular.
The program’s pedagogy therefore situates design like a procedure for inquiry, whereby the matched design curriculum introduces some representation, spatial, theoretical, and material practices out of which to integrate the landscape’s structure, function, and alter with time. Working from measure to agency, data to decision, the pedagogy positions design like a synthetic endeavor that evolves just as much from context and speculation because it does from questions of technique, beauty, and delight.
Research and work advanced through the program’s students and school reflect the above mentioned aims. From urban streams to urban forests, parks to cemeteries, streetscapes to city blocks, historic landscapes to military training grounds, the endeavors aim to integrate appearance (exactly what a landscape appears like) with performance (exactly what a landscape does).
Hopefully that you simply come along,
Jason Sowell, Director + Connect Professor
